Ohio’s Velvet Ice Cream A Real Cool Visit
Ever since 1914, folks in this area have been enjoying Velvet Ice Cream. Started by Joseph Dager in the basement of a Utica, Ohio, confectionary, the company is now in the competent hands of fourth generation descendants. It has grown from humble beginnings into a celebrated business. Oh, and it makes really yummy ice cream.
Stop by the home base and you can enjoy a free 30-minute walking tour of the facility. Guides will explain the ice cream’s origins and the history of Ye Olde Mill, which is now company headquarters. A visit to the Viewing Gallery offers a look at the seven steps it takes to make Velvet Ice Cream, which is created in small batches. The lineup of flavors has also expanded as the company has grown. In addition to selections such as Vanilla Lovers Trio, Fresh Strawberry and Turtle Tracks, you’ll find seasonal flavors—Summertime Peach and Pumpkin Pie, for example—as well as Ohio-themed options, such as Buckeye Brownie.
Every Memorial Day Weekend, Velvet Ice Cream teams up with Utica’s Sertoma organization to host an Ice Cream Festival. But you don’t have to wait until then to enjoy a taste. Sundays now through October there is entertainment on the patio—and ice cream, of course! Or visit on August 26, 2017, and you can take advantage of a special offer for National Banana Split Day. As anyone who has taken a lick and loved it, every day is a good day for ice cream!
