Home Cooking Rules At Ohio’s Der Dutchman Restaurant

Dining at Der Dutchman Restaurant & Bakery in Walnut Creek, Ohio is a lot like going to Grandma’s house—if grandma was Amish and an excellent cook and baker. Come hungry and be prepared to leave happy and sated.

Everything about Der Dutchman skews large. The restaurant is extremely spacious inside, all the better to host the throngs that come here for delicious home-style cooking. Portions too are large, so if you’ve got a teenage boy in tow, this is the place for you!

Although the menu has a wide selection of soups, sandwiches and salads, most people opt for one of the full dinner options. Order Der Dutchman’s Chicken Dinner and you’ll enjoy broasted or broiled chicken that’s moist and tender, along with two sides from a list of more than 25 choices, including real mashed potatoes and gravy. Slow-roasted turkey dinner and old-fashioned roast beef are other favorites on the menu. Can’t decide? Try the Country Amish Sampler, the restaurant’s take on a barn-raising meal that is an abundance of goodness—two meats, mashed potatoes, dressing, veggie, and tossed salad. If you’re with a group, you can order a Family-Style Meal that includes all the above dishes, plus pie.

And speaking of pie. While it’s hard to save room for dessert here, you’re definitely going to want to. The bakery’s pies are must-try, each one of them (more than 20 varieties) are outstanding. You might just want to buy a whole one to take home!
