Scenic Drives for Your Amish Country Itinerary
The Amish Country Byway
A designated 160-mile route, the Amish Country Byway traverses the heart of the largest Amish community in the United States. This part of Ohio features winding roads through prominent Amish communities—offering visitors a glimpse into another world. The route runs through quaint towns like Berlin, Millersburg, and Wilmot, among others! Gaze out the window to find a myriad of charming towns, Amish farmlands, vast fields, and rolling hills. You’ll love taking in the sights on this peaceful journey! Historic landmarks, museums, and farms along the byway offer curious travelers a chance to learn about the past. The Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center and the German Culture Museum are excellent stops along the way. Schrock’s Heritage Village is another stop to consider. Here, you can eat lunch, browse for antiques, visit ‘Tis the Season Christmas Shop, and more.
Take advantage of the dozens of attractions and activities along the way that may pique your interest. Indulge in hiking, biking, carriage rides, hot air balloon rides, and more! Plus, if you want to immerse yourself in a bit of Amish culture, stop by some of the many farms that sell baked goods, handmade items, antiques, and other traditional Amish goods. Be prepared to make plenty of stops, and don’t forget your camera!
From The White Oak Inn, we recommended a short loop through some of the byways for those who are short on time. If you are looking for an excellent day trip from our bed and breakfast, there is a long loop for you to explore!
Short Loop
Leaving The White Oak Inn, you will head towards Danville via US-62 East/Millersburg Road. You may be interested in stopping at Weaver’s Farm & Furniture, just outside of Danville, to browse their collection of hand-crafted furniture, visit the farm animals, or grab a sandwich at their deli. After crossing the Mohican River, the historic Bridge of Dreams (covered bridge) and the Mohican Valley Trail trailhead are on your right. This is another fantastic point of interest. Then, you will stay on US-62 East/Millersburg Road until it intersects OH-60, where you will head south.
As you wind your way through dense forest and farmland, you will have a second opportunity to see a historic covered bridge. The Helmick Covered Bridge is just a short drive from OH-60 (follow County Road 343 to Township Road 25). When you are back on US-60, continue south until you reach US-36 and head west. Then, turn right onto Walhonding Road/715 as you meander back towards the inn. Along the way, you will cross the Mohican River once more. You can also stop at Bat Nest Park or check out the Kokosing Scenic River – Water Trail (Riley Chapel Access).
Long Loop
This longer loop will take several hours, or the entire day, depending on how many stops you make. This route will pass by most of the attractions and landmarks mentioned at the top of the article. We think this is one of the best scenic drives in Amish County, and it a must-see. You will start this journey the same as our recommended short loop. However, you will stay on US-62 East/Millersburg Road through Millersburg until you reach Berlin. Here, you will take OH-39 East through Walnut Creek and follow it to OH-93 South.
Train enthusiasts will want to be sure to plan a stop at the Age of Steam Roadhouse Museum. Then, continue south until you reach US-36. At this intersection, you will turn right to return to the inn. You can also turn left, where a very short drive will take you to Raven’s Glenn Winery and Restaurant. End your day with a glass of wine or dinner overlooking the vineyard, or bring a bottle back to the inn to enjoy in the privacy of your suite. If time allows, there is one last stop along US-36 that you may enjoy—Historic Roscoe Village. To return to The White Oak Inn, you take Walhonding Road/715 and follow the same tail-end of the short loop.
Pro travel tip: You can follow our short or long loop in either direction … or you can create your own. We can’t wait to hear all about your scenic drive through beautiful Amish Country.
Other Options
The Holmes County Trail, a local gem, runs through Millersburg and offers a convenient link to the byway. Along the trail, you’ll find hikers, bicyclists, and even Amish buggies! This is a great way to get off the main byway to enjoy nature and indulge in some of the activities the area has to offer.
Another option is to explore the creek and river networks in the area. At one time, these water systems were critical to transportation and commerce. Today, they allow visitors and locals the opportunity to enjoy fishing, canoeing, and even swimming in the warmer months. The Mohican River attracts many visitors each year and serves as a natural oasis for outdoor lovers.
