Things to Do While You’re in Town
Gambier is home to the well-known liberal arts college, Kenyon College. The Kenyon College Bookstore at 106 Gaskin Avenue is a must-visit for those who love to browse titles and genres of all types. It’s the longest continually operating bookstore in the country and sells locally-made crafts, stuffed animals, and apparel, in addition to books. The bookstore is open 365 days a year.

Enjoy Time at the Brown Family Environmental Center
While visiting Gambier be sure to check out Kenyon College’s Brown Family Environmental Center. It’s a living laboratory surrounding the Kokosing River, encompassing over 600 acres, 8 miles of hiking and walking trails, and beautiful gardens. It’s the perfect spot to bird-watch or try your hand at nature photography. The center is used for biological research and offers many environmental education programs and events, most of them free and open to the public. Book a Tee Time at the Apple Valley Golf Club
If you can’t imagine a getaway without time on the links, Apple Valley Golf Club is a wonderful place to book a tee time. It’s 15 minutes from either the inn, or from Gambier, hosts a bar and grill on-site, and is considered a top-rated course in the state.
Get into Nature
Nature lovers will find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beauty of the area, either with activities on the Kokosing River, or the Kokosing Gap Trail. The Kokosing River has been designated a state scenic river and can be accessed from several points along the trail, as well as closer to the inn at Bat Nest Park, or in Millwood. You can enjoy kayaking, canoeing or fishing on the river.
Gambier is also home to Schnormeier Gardens, which is a privately-owned garden that is open to the public only one month a year, in June. Tickets are required and usually sell out well in advance. There are over 50 acres of manicured lawns, 10 lakes, waterfalls, meadows, garden art, multiple theme gardens and even a Japanese Teahouse. It’s simply spectacular.

No matter what activities you add to your itinerary, you’re bound to work up an appetite during your time in Gambier. Fortunately, there are plenty of eateries here to enjoy when cravings come calling. The Village Inn is a popular local restaurant that sits within a restored 1940s-era building. Guests can dine indoors or on the outdoor patio and enjoy menu options that range from wings and burgers to delicious pastas and vegetarian options too. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, make your way to Gambier Deli at 110 Gaskin Street. This destination is popular for its New York-style deli sandwiches that are served up between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm daily. The Kenyon Inn & Restaurant is a great option for a fine dining experience in Gambier with 4-star flair included. Here, the wine list is designed to impress, and the service is impeccable as well. If you’re looking for a place to get a caffeine fix, Wiggin Street Coffee at 101 East Wiggin Street is a top community gathering spot that sits within a beautiful historic building.
