4 Things to do in Ohio during the Spring

Visit the Sugar Creek Area

Also known as the Little Switzerland of Ohio, Sugar Creek, Ohio is only an hour’s drive from the Inn. Filled with hidden gems, our favorite attraction is the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum. From April to September you can take a tour to learn about The Age of Steam locomotives.

The town is a short drive to a few of our favorite local wineries! Baltic Mill Winery is owned by the Garver family who have been handcrafting wines such as their Little Daisy, Rosso del Baltico, and Blend No. 11.  Breitenbach Wine Cellars is another great winery that hosts the annual Dandelion May Fest. The festival is a celebration of the dandelion harvest where you can sample Breitenbach’s Dandelion Sangria, shop, and enjoy live entertainment.

A Spring Elopement

After the snow melts, some of our favorite flowers (snowdrops, daffodils and purple crocuses) make their return to the White Oak Inn grounds to set a beautiful scene for early spring elopement or wedding ceremonies on the gazebo.

Morel Season

Morel mushrooms are a wild delicacy prized for their subtle nutty texture and earthy flavor.  The wooded areas around the inn have ideal growing conditions for morels, and they usually start to appear in mid-April.  They are masters of disguise and finding them can be a challenge for even experienced mushroom hunters.  Morels can go for up to $100 a pound at local produce auctions.

It\’s fun to get out in the woods and do a little treasure hunting.   You never know, you might even find a mother lode of mushrooms and net a tidy little profit!   At the very least, bring your finds back to the inn where we\’ll be happy to show you the best way to prepare these tasty little morsels.

Roam with the Pets

Do you want to bring the entire family with you? We have several pet-friendly rooms and local trails that you can take your dog out for a walk while you are here. One of our local favorites is the Dog Fountain in downtown Mount Vernon!

The fountain is “fed” water by cute statues of pups with their mouths open. Inspired by Claude Cormier’s fountain in Berczy Park Toronto, the fountain features 18 dogs, one cat, four birds, a pony, and an apple and is truly a must-see!
